This stencil design inspired by the iconic image taken by Jeff Widener, is arguably the most powerful image of individual defiance of authoritarian state military power.  One man who had the immense bravery to block the path of a column of tanks, at his great personal risk and be doing so, to immortally inspire the oppressed with his audacious courage.

The Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 in Beijing, China, sometimes referred to as the '89 Democracy Movement. The protests were forcibly suppressed after the government declared martial law. In what became widely known as the Tiananmen Square Massacre, troops with assault rifles and tanks killed at least several hundred demonstrators trying to block the military's advance towards Tiananmen Square.

The number of civilian deaths has been estimated at anywhere from hundreds to thousands. The identity of the man in front of the tank isn't known, but given the violence that ensued, it's likely that he also paid the highest price for his brave defiance of the repressive Communist regime.
